My name is Joseph Koury, and I am artistically known as Joey Free. Boston is my home. I grew up on its South shore, loving pop culture, especially hip-hop and animated cartoons. Balancing these influences has been my appreciation for the classical arts and my passion for philosophy. These domains have been the playground for my creativity and my curiosity ever since I can remember as a young boy.
I draw. I paint. I write. I also perform spoken-word poetry and hip-hop music. Instrumental hip-hop is the beat of my heart, and poetic cadence is the rhythm of my soul. Creativity flows through every part of my being. Anyone who knows me will tell you that I live to express myself in as many ways as I can. I find inspiration from everything around me in all its myriad forms.
My Influences range from enlightened masters of the past like Da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Picasso, to more contemporary artists such as Ross, Moebius, and Brophy. Reflected in much of my work is an attraction to geometrics and vibrant colors. Triangles remind me of the great pyramids, evoking ancient wisdom, engendering awe and fascination. Circles radiate in me a sense of wholeness and completion. Shapes, in general, empower and fulfill me. Layering varying degrees of texture in my designs adds depth and dimension to the practice. Visually this cradles the flow of my sound.
My aim is to elevate the lives of those who experience my work by provoking self-inquiry and discovery. Inner journeys, hopefully, lead to actualization and elevate self-worth. Witnessing such moments of clarity motivates my artistry. It excites my imagination yet brings me focus and peace of mind. My intent is to create both visual and audio representations of the things that have altered, tweaked, or completely changed my perspective. Opening up channels from within has provided me the presence to learn about human nature and the world we live in, as well as my own creative process. I am constantly questioning this life. I try to acknowledge and appreciate each moment within it. From this state of being, I ask myself how I can be a deeper and wider influence in our society. My answer is creating art. My art is my Love.
